After a quick safety briefing, it’s time to build your snow igloo in Kemi!
Kemi is known for its unique winter sculptures and structures, such as the Kemi SnowCastle, which is built each winter entirely out of ice and snow. In Lapland, igloos are traditionally built using fresh snow. The guide will help you and show you the best techniques to build a sturdy and comfortable igloo. Typically, you’ll start by collecting the ideal snow – compact, dense and soft is the best. Then, you’ll make the base of the igloo using a shovel. You’ll begin packing the snow on top and creating the perfect spiral shape.
The walls of the igloo should be about 30-40 cm (12-16 in) thick. Once you are happy with the igloo structure, you’ll carve out windows and doors. Have a triumphant and enjoyable moment when you can actually crawl inside your snow igloo! After your hard work, a delicious light lunch will be served around a campfire inside a cosy teepee. As you eat, the guide will share stories about Lapland and life in the Arctic. Then, you’ll return to the starting point, where the igloo building activity in Kemi comes to an end.
